History
A Short History of Old Carroll Primitive Baptist Church
Old Carroll Church was constituted in the Mt. Airy area of Carroll County Maryland when 10 Primitive Baptist in the area,”erected a house of worship in their immediate neighborhood, which was dedicated on the fourth Lord’s day in September, the twenty-seventh day of the month in the year of our Lord One-thousand Eight-hundred and fifty seven.” They described themselves as being of the
“baptist denomination who reject as opposite extremes the distinguishing and unscriptural tenets of both Armenians and Absolute Predestinarians’ … and claim, as their distinguishing tenets, … Salvation is of God, … owning and acknowledging that an entire humble prayerful dependence on the mercy of God.”
As Elder Plummer Waters, who served as the Church’s first pastor, additionally expressed,
“They consider sufficiently expressive of their creed [Ephesians 2:8-10] “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” They regard good works as important and profitable to men placed in proper position.”
Throughout the years, through good times and troubles, the Church continued. Because no matter the external circumstances and no matter the difficulties, God and His word remain unchanging. We derive great comfort from the fact that God “is the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8). We follow the same doctrine and practice the apostles taught and the first century Church experienced, and know that Jesus provides all we need. We continue to hold to the great Truth that God died for us and redeemed us when we could do nothing to help ourselves. Because of this great gift, and in thanksgiving to His infinite grace and mercy toward us, we strive to live upright and God honoring lives.
The original church house which survived the Civil War remains to this day little changed. However, due to the needs of our Church body, we began to look for a new facility and in November of 2012 found the meeting house where we currently worship. Our current worship location is more centrally located for our members who live in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. We have experienced spiritual growth in our Church including new members. The Lord has blessed and continues to bless our congregation.
